A pond comes with the house. How great! That is what we thought to begin with. All the wonderful hours sitting by the pond watching the ducks and geese and feeding the fish. How relaxing. WRONG.
Don't get me wrong we love the pond but that is part of the problem. Ponds take work if you want to have something to enjoy. In the summer we have to set up and run a pump to keep enough air in the pond for the fish. We have to treat the pond to keep the algae down to a minimum. And then we have to work hard at keeping the weeds from growing around it and in it. I almost forgot... you had better have someone around with a gun to shot the snakes (water moccasins) and turtles. There is nothing worse than coming home with little ducks from the feed store and putting them in the pond and seeing them gobbled up. We now raise the ducks in a pen until they are big enough to fend for themselves before they go out on the pond. The turtles and snakes also eat the fish. We have now learned more about ponds then we ever though we would have to. Each year we put 600 lb. of stock salt in the pond, buy minnows for the fish to eat, spray for weeds around the edges and put copper sulfur in after setting up the fountain to control algae growth and lets not forget buying the catfish food to feed them.
I guess it is worth it to be able to sit and catch your own fish and eat them for dinner. And when the world gets really close and things are going way to fast then just sitting on the banks of the pond and relaxing makes it all worth it.
We hope you enjoy these pictures of our own little pond.

And a very special Thanks to the Angelina County Extension Agents for the information they have given us. |
